Highly Recommended Morning Pre-snacks "Puto Maya & Hot Chocolate" in the Island of Siquijor

A Beautiful Morning Treat at the Siquijor Market Center:

If you ever find yourself in Siquijor, don’t miss the chance to enjoy a simple yet heartwarming pre-morning snack at the Market Center. We had a truly delightful experience indulging in a local favorite, pure hot chocolate (tablea) paired with Puto Maya, a type of sticky rice delicately cooked in coconut milk.

The aroma alone was enough to draw us in, the scent of freshly melted pure cacao, rich and earthy, felt almost therapeutic. You can choose to enjoy your hot chocolate with or without milk, depending on your preference. We tried both and were pleasantly surprised at how each version brought out different notes in the cacao. The version without milk was bold and deep, while the milky one was smooth and comforting.

The puto Maya was the perfect companion — soft, sticky, and slightly sweet with the richness of coconut milk soaking into every bite. It was a wonderful contrast to the bitterness of the dark chocolate. Together, they made a balanced and satisfying local breakfast, especially for those who want to enjoy something traditional yet simple.

What makes it even more special is the setting. Enjoying this local treat in the open-air painitan shop, surrounded by the buzz of early morning activity, friendly vendors, and the slow rhythm of island life, adds to the overall charm. It’s not just about the food, it’s about the whole sensory experience.

And best of all? It’s incredibly affordable, so you can enjoy this authentic Siquijor moment without putting a dent in your budget.

If you're visiting Siquijor, this is a must-try local experience, delicious, genuine, and uniquely Filipino.
